Sadhna of Mahakali, the most superior among ten Mahavidyas of Tantra, is like Kalpavriksha which confers early success in this Kalyuga. The aspirant, having perfected this Sadhna does not face any kind of necessity in his life and attaining full sovereignty and final beatitude, he incurs the fulfillment of human birth. Kali is mentioned as the first amongst the Mahavidyas. Black as the night (ratri) she has a terrible and horrific appearance. The word "ratri" means "to give," and is taken to mean "the giver" of bliss, of peace of happiness.
No other form of divinity worshipped by the Hindu is so difficult of acceptance as Kali - the dark and terrible naked Mother, named after the night black complexion of her skin. Not just for Non-Hindus many of who visibly blanch, even in these days of political correctness when they see a picture of Kali. Many Hindus of impeccable pedigree have the same problem in coming to terms with her. A goddess that arouses so much genuine emotion, instead of tolerant curiosity, is a living force indeed, and Kali is easily amongst the six most popular forms of god worshipped amongst Hindus today. There is a concentration in Bengal, Assam and parts of South India.
Most scholarship is veering away from the (previously prejudiced) point of view that she is a remnant of primitive beliefs, an appallingly bloodthirsty tribal totem of uncivilized peoples, who has unaccountably made her way into the modern world because of the Hindu tendency to never really render any belief system obsolete. That is a colonial point of view, though it does have its adherents even today. Kali is also not convenient shorthand for some local manifestation of the Welt mutter (the World Mother). She was always an independent and powerful goddess in her own right and the Official Canon had to come to terms with her. They never succeeded in marginalizing her, or rendering her subservient to male authority, unlike the examples of Saraswati, Laxmi and sometimes Durga. That is a pretty remarkable achievement in itself and testifies to the sheer power of the Kali Archetype.

Goddess Kali holds the primary position among all the ten great learnings.

Once the deities went to the Himalayas and eulogised the personifications of the illusions of the world (Mahamaya). According to the Purana this place was the hermitage of Sage Matang. Pleased by them, Bhagavati appeared in the form of Matang's mistress and asked as to whom were they eulogizing. Instantly a divine appearance manifested from the body of that mistress, which was as dark as a Mountain in complexion. This divine appearance herself answered on behalf of the deities that these deities are eulogizing me.

Since the complexion of that divine appearance was black like a collyrium she was given the name of KALI.

Though the worship of Kali requires proper initiation yet one can attain her blessings by other means also. Goddess Kali is pleased by chanting mantras, doing worship and a sacrifice or burnt offering etc. either on the image, or by the help of Yantras (mystical diagrams) or by any other way shown by an able teacher (Guru).

If goddess Kali is pleased then all the aspirations of man gets fulfilled and he is saved from the dangerous calamities.

Worship - Normally, wishes and aspirations get fulfilled if either the cryptic mantra or the other mantra are chanted for 1,25,000 times (one lac and twenty five thousand), with full faith and devotion. The chanting of the mantras can be raised according to the requirement.

Before chanting the mantras the Kali Yantra should be properly worshipped.
